Overview
You can bulk import Units (for Multifamily Housing) and Properties (for Single Family Housing) directly into Manage using a CSV template. "Locations" and "Units" are used interchangeably in this article.
Requirements
To complete this workflow, you must have Administrator or a role that includes the unit import permission. If you don’t see the “Import Units” option, it usually means your role doesn’t have the required permission, and an Administrator will need to either run the import or update your access.
Steps
Phase 1: Download the CSV Template
- Log in to the Happy Manage web application at www.happy.co.
- Select the Property from the top-left dropdown menu.
- Click Units and Areas on the left-hand side.
- Click the three-dot icon on the right side of the screen, next to New Location.
- Click the link to download CSV template.
Phase 2: Prepare the CSV File
Open the downloaded template file and add your data to the corresponding columns; required fields will have an asterisk (*) for guidance:
- External ID: Optional unique ID for the unit. If provided, it helps match/update the same unit on future imports; if not, the system may create its own identifier based on address details.
- Building ID*: Building name/label (helpful for multi-building communities). If you don’t track buildings, you can leave it blank.
- Unit Number*: The unit’s identifier within the building (examples: 204, A-204, 12B). This is what distinguishes one unit from another at the same street address.
- Floorplan*: The unit’s floor plan name/code (if you track floor plans). Optional.
- Street number and Name*: The street address for the building (example: 123 Main St). This is the base address shared by units in that building.
- City*: City for the unit address.
- State*: State/region for the unit address.
- Country*: Country for the unit address.
- Postcode*: ZIP/postal code for the unit address.
- Notes: Optional. Any extra details you want to store about the unit (entry instructions, internal notes, etc.).
Phase 3: Import the File
- Save your completed spreadsheet and return to the Happy Manage web application.
- Navigate to Units and Areas and click the three-dot icon next to New Location.
- Click Import Locations.
- Upload your CSV file and click "Import Locations".
Once the import is completed, you will receive a notification if it was successful immediately after processing finishes, on the same screen. All properties will now be visible in your account. You can then go into any property to add a photo, as well as add or edit information as needed.
FAQs
What happens if my import fails?
If the units import fails, nothing from that file is imported; it's an all‑or‑nothing import. The system returns an error message indicating what needs to be fixed (common causes include missing required columns, a blank required value like unit/address line data, or duplicate units in the file).
Can I import units for multiple properties in a single CSV?
Does the system overwrite, skip, or create duplicates?
Is the template required to be saved as a specific CSV format?
The uploader accepts CSV files only. If the file is saved as .xlsx, the import will fail. Save as a standard comma-separated CSV (UTF‑8 if your editor asks) and keep the header row unchanged.
